6. TIP FINISH

Figure 14. This capillary has a tip with a polished finish. This finish produces a shiny or smooth looking stitch bond. After 1500 to 3000 bonds, the capillary becomes 'seasoned' and has a very light matte finish. A polished finish is typically specified for applications with very good bondability.

Figure 15. This capillary has a tip with a matte finish. This finish produces a textured stitch bond. A matte finish is used when there is less than good bondability. This finish allows for better coupling between the capillary and the wire and therefore better transference of ultrasonic energy. The matte finish is almost always necessary for smaller tip diameter tools.
