AEROFEED
VARI-CAB NITROGEN STORAGE CABINETS
The "VARI-CAB"
family of nitrogen storage cabinets is a unique concept in desiccator
design, offering users a selection of movable shelves and/or drawers in a
single cabinet. An easily adjustable pilaster and clip support system
allows users to select initially any combination of drawers and shelves
within the cabinet's size limits, and to alter that configuration any time
storage requirements change. Shelves and drawers can be added or removed
at any time, and can be positioned at any elevation in the cabinet to
provide whatever vertical spacing may be required for most efficient
utilization of cabinet space. Drawers may be fitted with a variety of
partitioning systems to form bins or cubicles for storing small items.
Extra shelves or drawers may be ordered at any time. In addition to the
choice of shelves and/or drawers, the user may specify any of three levels
of static protection, ranging from none to full, depending on how
sensitive stored items are to damage from EOS/ESD or EMI fields (see below). |

Cabinet
shells are offered in six standard sizes - one, two and three door models,
each in a choice of two depths. Construction materials vary, depending on
the level of static protection specified (see Table 2 below), but all
models feature AEROFEED's time-honoured "bow-proof" double-plate
door design, sealing tightly with a single latch. Latches utilize a large
T- handle with 180 degree rotation from full open to tight closure and
provide for easy field adjustment of door gasket compression. On
groundable cabinets latches are connected to the internal grounding
system, automatically grounding the operator each time the latch handle is
touched.
Each shell is furnished with four pilaster columns, two on each side,
allowing adjustment of drawer and shelf elevations in 1/2" increments. |

Drawer
assemblies are available with interior depths of 1" or 1-3/4".
They are solidly constructed of 1/8" thick anodized aluminium and are
furnished, as standard, with solid bottoms. Partially open bottoms are
also available with certain optional partition assemblies for storage of
such items as waffle packs. Drawer movement is on full-extension ball
bearing slides, which fasten to pilasters with snap-in clips. A maximum of
four 1" or three 1-3/4" drawers may be installed behind each
door. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Shelves are satin anodized aluminium plate, 1/8" thick, contoured to
wrap around the four pilaster columns and provide full wall-to-wall
storage surfaces. They are inherently static dissipative and will support
uniformly distributed loads of 30 pounds or more, with a maximum center
deflection of approximately 1/16".

Electrical continuity between shelves and ground (in grounded cabinets) is
achieved by direct contact between shelf surfaces and the four aluminium
clips (furnished with each shelf) which snap into the slotted pilasters
described earlier. There are no spring-loaded parts or feeler wires to
become bent or damaged, and no wires to connect or disconnect when moving
shelves from one elevation to another.
A maximum of four shelves is recommended per door opening to insure that
an operator is able to reach between them. |

All cabinets are furnished, as standard, with a gas
inlet fitting (mounted in the centre of the cabinet back) sized to accept
1/4" OD copper or hard plastic tubing. Electrically grounded units
are furnished, in addition, with a rear-mounted grounding stud, for
connecting the cabinet, by customer's wire, to plant ground. Also, as an
OPTION, a regulated Flow Meter can be ordered (see picture).

All
conductive and static dissipative surfaces inside a groundable cabinet are
connected to a single point in the cabinet interior, placed in series with
a one megohm resistor and then wired to a grounding terminal on the
outside back of the cabinet. Grounding requires only a hard wire
connection from the terminal to plant ground. |

Vari-Cabs
with the TSD option offer the ultimate in control of ESD and electrostatic
fields. They are almost identical in appearance and dimensions to other VC
cabinets, but are constructed of all static dissipative materials. They are
recommended for use in areas where no untreated acrylics are allowed, or
when parts to be placed in storage may be damaged by exposure to EMI fields,
even though no direct electrostatic discharge takes place. TSD cabinets
include the following features not found in other VC cabinets:
 |
All
interior surfaces are lined with aluminum (instead of just sides and
floor). Cabinet exteriors are covered with static dissipative
laminate,
not conventional laminate.
|
 |
Faceplates are made from
anodized aluminum plate, 1/8" thick, rather than white opaque
acrylic.
|
 |
Acrylic doors are permanently
coated, both inside and out, with a proprietary resin, making them totally
static-dissipative while retaining all of their flexibility and
transparency. |
